After School Classes

We offer a unique year-round Media Sampler curriculum in which students are introduced to a wide range of technologies and given the opportunity to explore.  In weekly 90-minutes classes, we cover a variety of topics using both freeware and commercial software packages, chosen explicitly to be accessible if a student wants to continue with a topic beyond what is covered in class.  Some of the topics include:

1. 1.Digital Art using Inkscape and Adobe Photoshop Elements
   

2. 2.Digital Photography using Point-and-shoot digital cameras,
   Adobe Photoshop Elements, iPhoto, and Comic Life Magiq
   

3. 3.Comic Drawing using Comic Life Magiq
   

4. 4.Animation using Stykz and Animation-ish
   

5. 5.Movie Making using Flip Video Cameras, iMovie and iStopMotion
   

6. 6.Game Creation using Scratch
   

Kids work on each topic for 3-4 weeks and complete one or more tangible projects that can be taken home.  We guide kids through the various phases of a project from pre-planning and storyboarding to production. Almost all projects can be customized and personalized to their own lives.

Projects will be mostly completed during class and kids will be provided all the necessary resources. For certain topics, kids may borrow cameras during specific weeks to film raw material for their projects.

It is recommended to sign up for the entire school year since topics build on skills learned previously.  However, kids joining during the year can start when their group begins the next topic.

Media Sampler Level I : This program is suitable for younger kids, currently in Grades 3-4, who have had some exposure to using computers but none in creating digital media. The topics are introduced at an age-appropriate level.  Age minimum 8. Maximum class size 11.

Media Sampler Level II : This program is suitable for kids who are in Grade 5 or older, and are comfortable using computers.  No previous knowledge of digital media creation is assumed, but kids are taught more advanced features and concepts. Maximum class size 11.
